Cholesterol and Diet

Cholesterol and Diet

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that your body needs to build cells and make hormones and vitamin D. However, too much cholesterol in the blood can clog arteries and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Your liver produces most of your cholesterol, and your body gets some from animal-based foods, which can be transported through the blood via carriers called lipoproteins.

Types of cholesterol

LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein): Often called "bad" cholesterol, high levels of LDL can build up in your arteries, leading to plaque that blocks blood flow.

HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein): Known as "good" cholesterol, HDL helps remove excess cholesterol from your bloodstream and carries it back to your liver to be excreted.

Diet, Weight, Exercise- all can impact the amount of healthy and not so healthy cholesterol in the body.
Losing weight often can help improve cholesterol, blood pressure, inflammation, and other health concerns.

As we have learned more about cholesterol, the amount in our blood and what is considered healthy has changed. Some people worry that it is because by lowering the standard or goal, drug companies can prescribe more medication. That may not be completely true because the amount of cholesterol in our blood has actually decreased since the 1970’s – meaning we are testing it differently and beginning to look at the whole person not just the blood work.

This is similar to the BMI tables. These were created in the 1830’s to help assess body fat before we had tools to measure body mass.  Same with cholesterol tables.
That said – we all should try to protect our heart health – and here are some foods that can help lower cholesterol.

A heart-healthy low-cholesterol diet may include foods like:

·       Plants with high water content, like spinach and other leafy greens help remove cholesterol from the body. High water content in plants helps with cholesterol by promoting fullness with fewer calories, which displaces less healthy foods. More importantly, water-rich plants are often also high in fiber, and soluble fiber specifically helps lower cholesterol by binding with it in the digestive tract and removing it from the body.

·       High-fiber foods, including beans, broccoli, sweet potatoes, and a range of vegetables. Fiber helps reduce the impact of sugar and fat in the diet, by helping take it out of the body naturally.

·       Whole grains, such as oats, whole wheat bread, brown rice, and even popcorn also have fiber.

·       Fruits and berries, such as blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, apples, contain pectin a different type of fiber that help lower LDL. These are also higher in polyphenols to help fight inflammation too.

·       Nuts such as walnuts and almonds. These provide a few benefits – like fiber, healthy fat that can lower cholesterol. Yes – healthy fats can help fight cholesterol. Then they have plant sterols that help block the absorption of cholesterol.

·       Polyunsaturated fats, like certain vegetable oils. These include canola oil, sunflower seed oil, and olive oil. These can raise the good HDL fats in your body which then help remove excess cholesterol.

·       Eat fatty fish 2-3 times a week. Not only is it replacing meat or proteins, Omega-3s reduce triglycerides in the bloodstream and also protect the heart by helping prevent the onset of abnormal heart rhythms. You can also try MCT oils as they can help boost HDL cholesterol levels.

Just be careful – depending on the brand you may need to get used to the MCT. Some oils at Whole foods have warning that too much too fast can cause diarrhea. That is  why our Ignite is different. We have blend of c8/c10/c12 to make it easy to digest. MCT’s help brain function, support healthy skin, help you feel fuller and help provide energy.

·       Fiber supplements – but not all fiber is created equal. Some fiber like Metamucil may cause gas and discomfort because they are a bulking agent that swells to 30x it’s size. prebiotic fiber can help fight cholesterol by binding to cholesterol in the digestive tract, preventing its absorption, and by being fermented by gut bacteria to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These mechanisms increase cholesterol excretion and can help lower total and LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels. This is why we have prebiotic fiber in our shake, and in Fiber pro. Other companies use gums to thicken a shake and then can list them as a fiber. But they really are just thickeners. The Clinically studied fiber we use has more benefits – from satiety, to mood, to boosting probiotics in the gut up to 40%, and to helping cholesterol.

Foods that can make cholesterol worse:

·       Red meat, like beef, pork, and lamb which have saturated fat that can increase LDL.

·       Processed meats like sausage

·       Baked goods and sweets

·       Fried foods

·       Tropical oils such as palm oil and coconut oil

Things that we think were bad but are now being shown that was a myth

·       Heavy amounts of butter/cream  For most people, the cholesterol in foods like eggs, butter, and cream doesn't have a significant effect on blood cholesterol because saturated and trans fats are more influential. We also know that real butter has Vitamins: Butter is a good source of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and K, which are important for immune function, bone growth, and heart health.

·       Short- and medium-chain fatty acids: These fats are quickly absorbed for energy and have been shown to have anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory effects.

·       Butyrate: This fatty acid may support digestive health, reduce inflammation, and help with weight control.

·       Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA): Found in higher amounts in butter from grass-fed cows, CLA may have anti-cancer and anti-obesity effects.

·       Eggs – contain cholesterol and for years we were told they were bad for us. This is no longer true. We know eggs contain choline and Omega’s which we know are good for brain and heart health. The real issue was when eating eggs, most people consume them with bacon and other foods that are not as healthy.

·       And for Triglycerides – avoid sugar!
When you eat too much sugar, your liver makes more LDL while lowering the amount of HDL in your body. The extra calories from a sugary diet also leads to more of something called triglycerides, a type of blood fat that plays a role in your cholesterol health.

So yes -all food in moderation but be afraid of margarine, not butter. Margarine is full of bad fats.

Supplements to add:
1. Berberine - May reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad") cholesterol and triglycerides.

(we now have this in Gluco Support too).

2. Fish Oil – supports healthy triglycerides – and no one gets enough. We have Dr. Seidman’s Vital Omega- which is molecurlaly distilled to remove heavy metals, and is combined with black cumin seed oil, flax oil, pumpkin seed oil for a more potent formula than others – 4x more potent.

Anxiety, ADHD and Diet

Anxiety, ADHD and Diet

The brain and gut are interrelated and the balance of our gut can definitely impact our mood, anxiety, PTSD and more.

Anxiety is pretty common – about 18% of the population has anxiety at any given time. It can result in Heart racing, trouble sleeping, trouble concentrating. It is also interlinked with depression. Almost ½ of people diagnosed with depression have anxiety. Though they are different disorders, the treatment for them is often the same.

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/326354.php#anemia

Nutrition and exercise can help. Studies show that exercise is also very important and there’s lots of evidence that regular exercise boosts mood, especially if you’re able to exercise outdoors in a green environment. Even a walk in the park or a stroll by the river is thought to be helpful.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/generalized-anxiety-disorder/expert-answers/coping-with-anxiety/faq-20057987#:~:text=In%20some%20people%2C%20certain%20foods,overall%20physical%20and%20mental%20health.

Mmost doctors only know how to treat with medications. They are not nutritionists, and they don’t have the time, nor do they get paid by insurance, for teaching what to eat to help improve health beyond the general guidelines. Lynette went to multiple doctors, and not one offered nutrition advice. And several medications later – some made the symptoms worse.

So how and why can nutrition help those feel better if they have anxiety and/or depression?

The gut and brain are connected through the gut-brain axis, which sends signals between the two via the vagusnerve. This communication can be disrupted by imbalances in the gut microbiota or bacteria, which may lead to mental health issues like anxiety and depression. For example, irritation in the gastrointestinal (GI) system can trigger mood changes by sending signals to the central nervous system. This can cause the brain to go on high alert, similar to how an anxious mind can cause an upset stomach.

Johns Hopkins Medicine there is that changing the gut microbiome can help with anxiety. For example, scientists have shown that transplanting gut microbes from people without anxiety into those with anxiety can help reduce symptoms in the short term. Probiotic supplements may also help, as one study found that they improved depression and sleep quality in students with mild anxiety and depression

Much of our poor diet is due to how much sugar and carbs we now eat. Sugar works in the brain like cocaine – and creates a happy rush, followed by a fall. So we crave more, eat more. It then feeds the bad bacteria in our gut, altering our serotonin, our gut brain axis, and our mood. A viscious cycle.

Harvard Medicine had an article recently on this too.

Pay attention to your gut-brain connection – it may contribute to your anxiety and digestion problems.

https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/the-gut-brain-connection

Now why did the Shake and Control help so fast?

A few reasons.

1. Protein in the morning – the Mayo clinic recommends a protein breakfast to help anxiety because it gives you energy and helps keep your blood sugar in balance. This can help with mood.

The Jump To Health protein shakes provide easier to digest protein than other brands, and higher quality too. Then we add in the Aminogen and make it even easier to digest and absorb. Then the prebiotic fiber in the shake has been clinically shown to boost probiotics by up to 40%.

This helps balance the gut and that helps balance the gut brain connection.

Not only has prebiotic fiber been studied for helping with gut health, but depression too.

Prebiotics feed "friendly" bacteria in the gut, and research has shown that people with certain digestive disorders have a higher risk of anxiety and depression. In fact, eight out of nine clinical trials that treated patients with prebiotics or probiotics found that mood improved significantly, with a decrease in anxiety and depressive symptoms

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10490379/#:~:text=Of%20the%20nine%20clinical%20trials,in%20anxiety%20and%20depressive%20symptoms.

SO let your food be thy medicine and thy medicine be food is real.

What is also interesting in the clinical reviews - Depletion of serotonin contributes to depression, as it is important in mood regulation. Since 95% of our serotonin is made in the gut – this is another reason to focus on gut health. All of JTH products – all of them – have a benefit for gut health.

The hormone serotonin Serotoninis a mood stabiliser, and impacts wellbeing and happiness.

Foods that boost serotonin include - apples, barley, berries, citrus fruits, chicory root, and jersualem artichoke, and butter helps with butyrate and then foods that help with tryptophan – including spirulina, milk, cheese, eggs, salmon, sunflower seeds, onion.

The shake, fiber pro have the prebiotic benefits of chicory root, Jerusalem artichoke in it.

The spirulina and other nutrients that boost serotonin are also in our Fruit Power and Veg Power capsules.

Now interestingly – I talk a lot about the Aminogen in our shake – that it is there to help us digest the protein and absorb it into lean muscle. But there are other health benefits too – including helping serotonin and mood.

https://www.neuroscienceinc.com/news/2023/understanding-digestive-enzymes-and-supporting-healthy-digestion

Proteolytic enzymes or Aminogen are digestive enzymes that break down proteins into amino acids. These amino acids help the body build muscle and neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, and GABA.

So the shake helped fast because it helped keep blood sugar stable, boosted probiotics in the gut for better balance, and helped boost serotonin too.

Then Control. Why is control so powerful in helping people feel happier?

Per medical news – one ingredient in the Control is 5HTP. 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a naturally occurring amino acid, and is the precursor for neurotransmitters, which are chemicals that transmit a nerve impulse across neuronal gaps that are called synapses. These neurotransmitters include serotonin and melatonin.https://www.news-medical.net/life-sciences/The-Relationship-Between-Serotonin-and-5-HTP.aspx

5-HTP helps raise serotonin levels in the brain. Since serotonin helps regulate mood and behavior, 5-HTP may have a positive effect on sleep, mood, anxiety, appetite, and pain sensation.

https://www.news-medical.net/life-sciences/The-Relationship-Between-Serotonin-and-5-HTP.aspx

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/0003986162900620

Now that is not the only ingredient that can help support healthy mood.

In addition to 5HTP, which converts to serotonin, we also have Dl-Phenylalanine. This is also a natural amino acid. DL-phenylalanine can increase serotonin activity, which could help with pain relief and depression in patients taking opiates for chronic pain. It is also known for its antidepressant properties, because it may increase norepinephrine levels, which can help with depression and attention issues.

In addition Control has 75 mg of caffeine.

Per WebMd –Research into coffee and depression has found that people tend to experience less severe symptoms when they drink coffee.

Now in high doses caffeine can make anxiety worse. But at low levels – which is what we have in Control - In low doses, caffeine may help depression,” per the Journal of the American Medical Association. The reason is because caffeine “stimulates dopamine, which is a chemical in your brain that plays a role in pleasure motivation and learning.”

https://www.webmd.com/diet/what-to-know-about-coffee-and-depression

https://www.ama-assn.org/delivering-care/public-health/what-doctors-wish-patients-knew-about-impact-caffeine

The caffeine source we use is from Guarana. This is a tropical fruit that is known for boosting happy feelings, help reduce fatigue, boost brain health, and protect the heart.

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/guarana-benefits

One study looked at the effects of different doses of guarana on mood and learning. Participants received either no guarana, 37.5 mg, 75 mg, 150 mg or 300 mg.

People who received either 37.5 mg or 75 mg of guarana achieved the highest test scores. Since low doses of guarana provide low doses of caffeine, it’s believed that other compounds in guarana aside from caffeine may be partially responsible.

And guarana has a lot of good safety data too. It has antioxidants and many health benefits including helping with eye health as we age, fighting cellular issues, boosting gut health.

Then green tea extract – one of the most studied ingredients of all time – has neurochemical and behavioral benefits because it too increases dopamine and serotonin.

hhttps://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23625424/#:~:text=An%20increase%20in%20dopamine%20and,serotonin%20and%2For%20dopamine%20metabolism.

Last but not least in Control is Garcinia. It too has been well studied and shown. In one study it was shown to help anxiety, sociability, and dopamine production. Dopamine is another hormone that is involved in brain function, pleasure, memory and attention, focus. Back to the gut again – about 50% of dopamine is produced in the gut

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s42452-021-04902-z

So Control boosts mood, a little energy, and boosts gut health too. It is great when dieting as it can help lessen cravings and help you stay on track. Or it can help those who want to get a boost of good mood.

Now what do we eat that can help or hurt our happy mood?

The average American diet has gotten bigger, and heavier on grains, and lower quality fats.

https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2016/12/13/whats-on-your-table-how-americas-diet-has-changed-over-the-decades/

Your brain is about 2/3 fat – and it needs fat to thrive. It also needs antioxidants found in fruits and nuts , tea, and other products. Foods that can impact the brain and your mood include:

-Nuts – high in fat, and fiber- especially macadamia nuts, almonds

-Omega fats – like those in our shake – flax, sunflower, or fish oils. These all support a healthy brain. Everyone should take an Omega – you really cannot get enough. And guess what – we have a super powerful and unique one coming July 1!

-Low sugar. Sugar is so bad for the brain. Watch how much sugar you are eating. You will see it in everything.

-Caffeine – a lot of studies are showing that caffeine in coffee or tea can help support a healthy brain and mood, and fight alzheimers and parkinsons, even memory loss.

- protein- our body is comprised of protein – our skin, hair, muscles, nails- all need protein to thrive. We need to get adequate protein.

-Hydration – most adults are dehydrated – 74%. This slows metabolism and affects our brain too. So be sure to drink lots of water, and tea to help the brain. Especially green tea.

-Fiber – there are so many studies right now on the emerging area of our second brain in our body – our “gut’. You can google it. Your gut is where 94% of your serotonin resides. So if you have a bad gut bacteria imbalance – you will not sleep as well, you can be crabbier. We use a special fiber in our Fiber Pro. Studies have been done on it that show that it helped school children do better on tests than those who don’t take it. It really is a great product.

https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/nutritional-strategies-to-ease-anxiety-201604139441

Foods to Avoid:

Fast food is cheap, convenient, and tastes good (most of the time). However, researchers believe there’s a linkTrusted Source between depression and levels of inflammation in the body, and inflammation is exacerbated by ingredients commonly found in large quantities in fast food dishes, like artificial trans fats, refined carbs, sodium, and sugar.

One large study found that people who eat fast food regularly are at a 40% greater risk of developing depression, and researchers suggest that the high amounts of trans fats in fast food products were a primary contributing factor. Meanwhile, other researchers discovered that people who frequently eat fast food were less resilient to depressive symptoms.

https://psychcentral.com/depression/foods-that-cause-depression#alcohol

So for fast meal – have a shake instead. It takes less than a minute to mix up a smoothie, a minute to make a microwave or bundt cake. And 15 minutes to make 5-6 protein bagels using our shake mix.

Make some pancakes with our shake mix and freeze. There are many ways to get healthy meals, fast. Also take a look at our New You in 22 program – the meals and sides are easy to make and food the whole family can enjoy – and they are low sugar, low glycemic and good for brain health and mood.

Many people enjoy a glass or two of wine to lift their mood, and it’s hardly surprising — alcohol encourages the release of serotonin (aka the “happy chemical”) in our brain.

However, for those with depression, drinking alcohol could have the opposite effect, as studies suggestTrustedSource higher intake may lead to increased symptoms. This is sometimes called “alcohol-induced depressive disorder,” which occurs only shortly after you drink alcohol

Simple or refined carbs – white rice, pasta, white bread – these turn to sugar in the body and impact mood and gut health, feeding a bacteria imbalance. enty of research supports the link between unrefined grains and depression. For example, one in women postmenopausesaw that those who ate refined grains had a greater risk of new-onset depression. If you want to eat these – take a GlucoSupport before the meal to help lower they glycemic load, lower the absorption and calories too.

We’ve long been warned of the dangers of eating too much salt, particularly around the negative effects on blood pressure and cardiovascular health. But it also impacts inflammation in the body, and has a negative impact on the gut microbiome, which impacts the brain too. Today the average adult in the USA is eating 4000 mg of sodium a day – when we should get 1500-2000mg. So when shopping, look for low sodium or no sodium added foods. And stay hydrated. We know that the average person is dehydrated – drink more to help flush hidden sodium out.

Sugar- Some research indicates a link between sugar intake and depression. Sugar increases inflammation and hormone imbalance, both of which are linked to mood, feeds the bad bacteria in the gut, and has a potential impact on the growth and development of brain cells.

influence on neurotransmitters in the brain

Aspartame and artificial sweeteners - in one people who consumed a diet high in aspartame experienced more depression and irritable mood. Researchers suggest this may be because the ingredient impacts the balance of chemicals in the brain (such as the “pleasure” chemicals serotonin and dopamine) and increases levels of cortisol, the “stress” hormone. This ingredient is in a lot of diet sodas.

Eat more fruits, veg, protein, especially at breakfast. Eat healthy fats for brain health. Plenty of fiber and water for gut health. Avoid sugar, watch the alcohol, and salt and sugar and aspartame.

Nutrition recommendations:

1. Add a magnesium supplement. We have magnesium in KeTonic, and adding more may be good – so look for a magnesium supplement at your pharmacy or grocery store.

Keytonic https://www.fluid.app/s/c39657

2. Add the Fruit & Veg capsules – anti inflammatory and also very good for the gut.

Fruit & Veg capsules https://www.fluid.app/s/942f1a

3. Add Fiber Pro for the gut brain axis https://www.fluid.app/s/2042e9

4. Ignite for the healthy MCT for the brain and gut https://www.fluid.app/s/8403cc

High Blood Pressure and diet

High Blood Pressure and diet

Blood pressure is the pressure that occurs when blood pushes against the walls of your arteries. Today in the USA – about 1 in 2 people have high blood pressure, and many do not know it because you don’t feel symptoms.

High blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack, dementia, vision loss, kidney disease, peripheral artery disease which can cause pain, cramping, and even loss of limb.

You can help your blood pressure naturally, by

• Physical activity each week (about 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week)

• Not smoking

• Eating a healthy diet, including limiting sodium (salt) and alcohol

• Keeping a healthy weight

For those with high blood pressure

https://healthmatch.io/high-blood-pressure/foods-to-avoid-with-high-blood-pressure#what-is-high-blood-pressure

https://www.eatingwell.com/article/7571306/best-and-worst-foods-for-healthy-blood-pressure/

1. Watch the sodium. The recommended upper limit for those with Blood pressure concerns is 1500 mg, and upper limit for all at 2300 mg. Unfortunately to day the average person is getting more than double the recommended amount at 3400mg, which is also 50% more than we should.

There is a lot of salt in food – it makes bland food taste better, and can help preserve it too.

So read your labels and try cooking with out salt. Once you go low sodium, you will be amazed at how salty food tastes, and how thirsty it can make you. The sodium can also help retain water in your body which puts more pressure on your heart.

2. Another thing that increases blood pressure – which may surprise you – is sugar.

Sugar is a key contributor to heart disease.

Eating too much sugar can inhibit the production of nitric oxide (NO) in blood vessels. Nitric oxide normally helps with vasodilation (expanding of the blood vessels). Without NO, vasoconstriction (narrowing of the blood vessels) can result, leading to high blood pressure.

https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/007483.htm

3. Fried Foods

Fried foods like french fries or chicken wings can increase your risk for diabetes, and for high blood pressure. They raise blood pressure and can constrict blood vessels. They typically also are high in sodium.

Health fats do not. You can eat nuts, avocado, olive oil and improve your heart health, gut health and brain health.

4. Alcohol – while a glass of wine is good for our heart, especially red wine – too much of any alcohol can be bad. Alcohol can stimulate your cortisol hormone – or stress hormone, causing weight gain, fatigue, and impact your heart.

Foods to eat.

1. Healthy fats – as we already noted – walnuts, avocado, olive oil, even butter had butyric acid that boosts good bacteria in the gut, and where more butyric acid is made that helps reduce inflammation and help circulation and heart health.

2. Banana’s, beets, and spinach have potassium and that can help flush sodium from the body. We have an electrolyte balance in our KeTonic too.

3. Calcium - Calcium is vital for heart health, playing roles in heart muscle function, blood clotting, and regulating blood pressure. We have this nutrient in Vital Daily in the Vital Pak supplements from Dr. Seidman. We also have calcium and a nutrient in our Core shake that boosts absorption of calcium into the body by +47%. One Core shake a day not only fuels you with lean protein, low sodium, and full serving of prebiotic fiber – but it helps you absorb calcium from the shake and any foods you eat during the day.

4. Fiber – especially prebiotic fiber - Prebiotic fibers, such as those found in cooked garlic, cooked onions, raw asparagus, and sweet potatoes, can contribute to healthy blood pressure by promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. These bacteria produce substances, like short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which can help lower blood pressure. Additionally, prebiotic fibers can improve the absorption of minerals like calcium, which may also contribute to blood pressure management.

We have a full serving of a clinically studied and patented prebiotic fiber in the whey based Core shake, and the plant based V-Pro shake. We also have 3 types of prebiotics in our Tri-Active Fiber Pro.

How can JTH help?

1. We can help you lose and maintain your weight.

2. Our shakes are lean protein, low fat, have prebiotic fiber, and nutrients to help you absorb nutrition better. We are more than a protein shake – we are a health shake.

3. Fiber pro – unlike other fibers – this one is not gassy or gritty and it is prebiotic fiber. Other brands are not. Affordable too. Mix into your morning coffee or afternoon tea, or stir into yogurt, soup or any food and boost your heart, gut, brain, moodand overall health.

4. Excelerade  - contains Citrulline malate is a nutrient that can help dilate blood vessels and help them stay soft and supple. It converts to arginine in the body which supports healthy blood flow, oxygen in the blood, and can support healthy blood vessels too.

Athletes often supplement with Citrulline malate for a reason!

Keytonic https://www.fluid.app/s/c39657

7. MCT’s – and a keto diet may aid brain health and also blood pressure. We have an easy to digest form in the Ignite product. You can put it in coffee, tea, juices, etc. for cream flavor and to curb hunger.

Great for intermittent fasting it curbs hunger, and tastes like ice cream with no sugar.

Why Fats are Important in Your Diet

Nutrition Collections Series

Busting the Food Myth: Why Fats are Important in Your Diet

by Audrey Sommerfeld | Founder & CEO

August 2024

Let’s clear up a big misunderstanding: the idea that all fats are bad. Far from it—your body needs healthy fats to function properly! Not only do they provide energy, but they're also vital components of every cell, including those in your brain, which is about 60% fat.

The Vital Roles of Nutritional Fats

Fats are indispensable in:

  1. Hormone Regulation
  2. Body Temperature Maintenance
  3. Immune System Support
  4. Reproductive Health
  5. Insulin Signaling
  6. Nutrient Absorption

Back in the 1980s, a flawed study and aggressive food lobbying skewed dietary guidelines towards carbs and away from fats. This led to increases in obesity and other health issues as carbs can turn to sugar, causing insulin spikes and mood fluctuations.

The Power of Feeling Full with Dietary Fats

Fats help manage your hunger better than carbs. They take longer to digest, which keeps you feeling full longer. Starting your meal with a fat-rich food like avocado salad, cream soup, or cheese can help you consume less overall.

Here’s What You Gain from Fats:

Brain and Skin Health

Essential for nourishing your brain, butter contains butyric acid, known for supporting both brain and gut health. Butyric acid is a short-chain fatty acid that serves as a primary energy source for colon cells, aids in maintaining intestinal barrier function, and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Satiety

Incorporating fats like those found in the keto diet can help reduce your overall calorie intake. Fat takes longer to digest (longer than protein, and much longer than carbs), so when you begin a meal with a cream soup, or cheese, or avocado salad – you will eat less overall.

Some say that along with walking more, eating healthy fats is why the French are thinner! The French eat more fats – think cream and cheese – and by doing so, eat less food overall.

Nutrient Absorption

Fats aid in absorbing fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K.The fats you absorb from food gives your body essential fatty acids called linoleic and linolenic acid. They are called "essential" because your body cannot make them alone and needs them for brain development, controlling inflammation, and blood clotting.

Energy

Fats provide sustained energy, especially during prolonged physical activity. During exercise, your body burns calories from the carbohydrates you have eaten. But after 20 minutes, your body depends on calories from fat to keep going.

Choosing the Right Fats

Not all fats are created equal. Knowing the difference between good and bad fats can help you make healthier dietary choices.

Good Fats

Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are your allies in maintaining good health. You can find these beneficial fats in foods like nuts, seeds, avocados, and cold-water fish such as salmon and herring. Additionally, oils derived from olives, corn, sunflowers, and other vegetables are packed with these healthy fats. A quick tip to identify unsaturated fats is that they remain liquid at room temperature.

Omega-3 fatty acids, a specific type of polyunsaturated fat found in flax seeds, walnuts, and fatty fish, are particularly good for brain function and overall heart health.

Check out Vital Omega https://www.fluid.app/s/829a78

Butter also contains butyric acid, a potent fatty acid known for its ability to support digestive health, reduce inflammation, and lower disease risk. It provides essential energy to colon cells, aids in blood sugar regulation, and helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

Bad Fats

Conversely, trans fats are the fats you need to avoid. Commonly found in processed foods like margarine, trans fats can wreak havoc on your health. They increase LDL (bad) cholesterol levels while lowering HDL (good) cholesterol, which can lead to clogged arteries and heightened heart disease risk. Additionally, trans fats can make blood platelets stickier, further increasing the risk of heart disease.

While fats like monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and the butyric acid in butter can boost your health, trans fats found in processed foods can do significant harm. By choosing your fats wisely, you can enjoy the benefits of a healthier, well-balanced diet.

Nutrition for Bone & Joint Pain

Nutrition for

Bone & Joint Pain

by Audrey Sommerfeld | Founder & CEO

February 2024

For those that suffer muscle and bone pain (torn rotator cuff surgery, back pain, fusions) nutrition can help play a role in fighting inflammation and pain.

Too much sugar, alcohol, lack of water, poor diet can contribute to feeling worse.

Help our body fight inflammation by avoiding or fighting some of the things that can make inflammation worse.

Factors that Increase Inflammation:

 1. Obesity – lots of studies show that being overweight can cause your body to create more cytokines which increase inflammation. And with diabetes – as we become more resistant to insulin, we see more inflammation. So losing weight can help, plus it takes pressure off joints and knees. One pound of weight loss removes 4 pounds of pressure on the knees – so it can help.

2. Diet – if you eat a lot of sugar, and most people do – we eat an average of 156 pounds per person per year hidden in our foods – it can increase the bad bacteria in your gut and increase inflammation.

3. Smoking – smoking increases inflammation

4. Sleep and Stress – lack of sleep, and stress in life can make your body more inflammatory too.

5. Foods that make inflammation worse: Refined carbohydrates, such as white bread and pastries. Refined carbs have had most of their fiber removed so that they convert to sugar faster in your body. This makes you happy, then hungry. And then it feeds the bad bacteria in your gut. Leading to more inflammation and tiredness.

Foods to Avoid

Sugars and high fructose corn syrup.

Look at the added sugar in your dressings, limit or stop soda, limit juice drinks as they are often just High Fructose corn syrup without fiber – or add Fiber Pro to offset the sugar and balance it back out – similar to eating fruit.

Look at cereal, yogurt, ketchup – try to avoid sugar as much as possible.

Sugar consumption has grown 492% since the mid 1970’s. We eat an average of 8 oz.of sugars a day hidden in our food. And it is not just sugar. We also eat a lot of fructose and now the new crystalline fructose – which is a higher concentrated form of high fructose corn syrup.

Fructose puts you at a greater risk for:

  1. Metabolic Syndrome – which can increase blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, triglycerieds and fat around the waist.
  2. Insulin Resistance – diabetes risk
  3. Obesity
  4. Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver disease
  5. Colo-rectal cancer
  6. Intestinal permeability
  7. Bacteria growth
  8. Damage blood vessels
  9. Contribute to heart health issues and cause inflammation in blood vessels.
  10.  And fructose can be plain on a label, or can come from coconut palm sugar, molasses, agave and other sugars that sound healthy.

Is Sucralose – AceK – any better?

A lot of companies use combinations of sweeteners. Years ago we all thought it was a good alternative to sugar – but is it?

  1. Studies show it can increase hunger so you eat more.
  2. Some studies have shown that sucralose can change your gut microbiome by lowering the number of good bacteria by half.
  3. Research done on animals shows that sucralose can also increase inflammation in the body.

Avoid unhealthy fat like margarine, shortening, and lard.

Eat real butter – it has butyric acid which is good for the bacteria in our gut. Margarine does not have this. Margarine is higher in Omega 6 – which may promote inflammation.

Most margarines contain trans fats, and they are often added to processed foods to extend shelf life. Unlike the naturally occurring trans fats found in dairy and meat, artificial trans fats have been shown to cause inflammation and increase disease risk.

In addition to lowering HDL (good) cholesterol, trans fats may impair the function of the endothelial cells lining your arteries, which is a risk factor for heart disease. Consuming artificial trans fats is linked to high levels of inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP).

In fact, in one study, CRP levels were 78% higher among women who reported the highest trans fat intake foods high in trans fats include French fries and other fried fast food, some varieties of microwave popcorn, certain margarines and vegetable shortenings, packaged cakes and cookies, some pastries, and all processed foods that list partially hydrogenated vegetable oil on the label.

Avoid a lot of processed meats and red meats – make sure your diet is balanced.

What to Eat To Fight Inflammation:

1. Healthy Fats – fatty fish like salmon, mackeral, sardines, or avocado, olive oil, even butter but not margarine.

Butter has healthy fats. And healthy dairy fat too. A lot of people think dairy is inflammatory - but truly, it can help heart health and gut health and brain health.

A 2017 review of 52 clinical studies, published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, concluded that dairy generally has anti-inflammatory effects, except in people allergic to cow’s milk.

And studies show fat can help the heart, where sugar increases triglycerides, sugar increases blood pressure, sugar raises bad cholesterol.

The science is showing that the low fat diet that started in the 1980’s was wrong. That is why on New You In 22 so many people report sleeping better, having more energy, and better skin, hair, nails. They are getting the right balance of healthy fats, and the right kinds of foods to fight inflammation and detox from all the sugar hidden in our food.

2. Fiber – from whole grains, and like that in our Fiber Pro– prebiotic fiber in asparagus, onions, chicory root. Fiber slows the amount of sugar being absorbed in your body from foods. Add Fiber pro to tea, coffee, or any beverage and it boosts gut health. Especially if you are trying to cut back on carbs. Get the benefits without the carbs and calories.

Info in Fiber Pro https://www.fluid.app/s/2042e9

3. Healthy Greens – kale, broccoli, spinach – have an ingredient called indole 3 carbinol which is powerful anti-inflammatory support, along with phytonutrients. This is why in our New You In 22 we have the Fruit Power & Vegetable Power capsules. If you don’t like kale – well these capsules have 37 cups worth. Super anti-inflammatory.

Info on Fruit, power, and vegetable power https://www.fluid.app/s/942f1a

4. Berries and high antioxidant fruits like blueberries, rasperries, blackberries – fruits contain antioxidants that help with inflammation.

They can also be found in Tea like our Power Ox or our Fruit Power and Vegetable Power capsules. We want people to eat fruits and vegetables - you will see this in our recipes – but many people don’t’ have access to them, don’t like them, or find they are grown in mineral depleted soil and have less nutritional value.

 Info On Power Ox https://www.fluid.app/s/0b1ad1

So when you supplement with Fruit Power and Vegetable Power capsules– people feel better fast!! Like 2-3 days fast. The fruit capsule has the power of 6-8 servings of fruit polyphenols. The vegetables way more than that! So these are the nutrients that work in the cell.

The Arthritis Organization has some great information on fruit and fruit extracts. Fruits, especially berries are loaded with antioxidants, and anthocyanins and carotenoids, which give berries their deep color. These compounds help rid the body of free radicals that promote inflammation and help prevent heart disease and certain cancers.

5. Nuts – which have healthy fat and fiber. Which is why in New You In 22 you will see our meal plans that include all of these healthy nuts, healthy fats, fiber, and healthy low glycemic, low sugar fruits and vegetables.

The program will detox your body of sugar, chemicals and without cleanse side effects that those detox teas can have. And we do it in a way that you don’t miss sugar, or have cravings. Instead it is pure, clean energy.
