High Blood Pressure and diet

High Blood Pressure and diet

Blood pressure is the pressure that occurs when blood pushes against the walls of your arteries. Today in the USA – about 1 in 2 people have high blood pressure, and many do not know it because you don’t feel symptoms.

High blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack, dementia, vision loss, kidney disease, peripheral artery disease which can cause pain, cramping, and even loss of limb.

You can help your blood pressure naturally, by

• Physical activity each week (about 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week)

• Not smoking

• Eating a healthy diet, including limiting sodium (salt) and alcohol

• Keeping a healthy weight

• Managing stress

For those with high blood pressure

1. Watch the sodium. The recommended upper limit for those with Blood pressure concerns is 1500 mg, and upper limit for all at 2300 mg. Unfortunately to day the average person is getting more than double the recommended amount at 3400mg, which is also 50% more than we should.

There is a lot of salt in food – it makes bland food taste better, and can help preserve it too.

So read your labels and try cooking with out salt. Once you go low sodium, you will be amazed at how salty food tastes, and how thirsty it can make you. The sodium can also help retain water in your body which puts more pressure on your heart.

2. Another thing that increases blood pressure – which may surprise you – is sugar.

Sugar is a key contributor to heart disease.

Eating too much sugar can inhibit the production of nitric oxide (NO) in blood vessels. Nitric oxide normally helps with vasodilation (expanding of the blood vessels). Without NO, vasoconstriction (narrowing of the blood vessels) can result, leading to high blood pressure.

3. Fried Foods

Fried foods like french fries or chicken wings can increase your risk for diabetes, and for high blood pressure. They raise blood pressure and can constrict blood vessels. They typically also are high in sodium.

Health fats do not. You can eat nuts, avocado, olive oil and improve your heart health, gut health and brain health.

4. Alcohol – while a glass of wine is good for our heart, especially red wine – too much of any alcohol can be bad. Alcohol can stimulate your cortisol hormone – or stress hormone, causing weight gain, fatigue, and impact your heart.

Foods to eat.

1. Healthy fats – as we already noted – walnuts, avocado, olive oil, even butter had butyric acid that boosts good bacteria in the gut, and where more butyric acid is made that helps reduce inflammation and help circulation and heart health.

2. Banana’s, beets, and spinach have potassium and that can help flush sodium from the body. We have an electrolyte balance in our KeTonic too.

3. Calcium - Calcium is vital for heart health, playing roles in heart muscle function, blood clotting, and regulating blood pressure. We have this nutrient in Vital Daily in the Vital Pak supplements from Dr. Seidman. We also have calcium and a nutrient in our Core shake that boosts absorption of calcium into the body by +47%. One Core shake a day not only fuels you with lean protein, low sodium, and full serving of prebiotic fiber – but it helps you absorb calcium from the shake and any foods you eat during the day.

4. Fiber – especially prebiotic fiber - Prebiotic fibers, such as those found in cooked garlic, cooked onions, raw asparagus, and sweet potatoes, can contribute to healthy blood pressure by promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. These bacteria produce substances, like short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which can help lower blood pressure. Additionally, prebiotic fibers can improve the absorption of minerals like calcium, which may also contribute to blood pressure management.

We have a full serving of a clinically studied and patented prebiotic fiber in the whey based Core shake, and the plant based V-Pro shake. We also have 3 types of prebiotics in our Tri-Active Fiber Pro.

How can JTH help?

1. We can help you lose and maintain your weight.

2. Our shakes are lean protein, low fat, have prebiotic fiber, and nutrients to help you absorb nutrition better. We are more than a protein shake – we are a health shake.
