Has the Obesity Epidemic gotten out of hand in the USA and Canada

Has the Obesity Epidemic gotten out of hand in the USA (article below)

https://www.forbes.com/sites/omerawan/2023/01/25/has-the-obesity-epidemic-gotten-out-of-hand-in-america/?sh=995d4cd66e62

19 states in America have obesity rates over 35 percent, increased from 16 states just last year. A decade ago, no states had obesity rates above 35 percent!

  1. Fast Food portions – are 4X bigger than the 1950s
  2. Our portion sizes have grown and we have with it.

The estimated obesity rate among Canadian adults ranges from 27.3% to 29.4%.

Key Statistics:

  1. 29.4% of Canadian adults are classified as obese, according to DataPandas, placing Canada 26th worldwide.
  2. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports a slightly lower figure of 27.3%, ranking Canada 76th globally.
  3. The Blogler lists Canada 24th, with an obesity rate of 29.4%.

These variations stem from differences in data collection methods, timeframes, and definitions of obesity across organizations.

National Trends:

According to Statistics Canada, the prevalence of obesity among Canadians aged 18 and older was 30% in 2022, up from 21% in 2003. This indicates a significant upward trend over the past two decades.

In summary, while exact rankings may vary, Canada consistently ranks among the top 30 countries globally in terms of adult obesity rates

Who is Audrey Sommerfeld

“I grew up on food stamps. I wore leg braces to walk. I had facial deformaties and had to wear braces and break my jaw, and speech therapy to speak clearly. I was told to settle. I was disowned for dreaming bigger. And I almost ended it all, until I heard a voice that said, ‘You were meant for more.’”

Audrey Sommerfeld, our Founder, is no stranger to adversity, or to scale.

She built global brands at P&G, Johnson & Johnson, Herbalife, and ViSalus—helping take companies from millions to billions.

But she also saw the greed, the hype, and the dishonesty that plagued the health and wellness industry.

So she built what she wished existed: A values-based company rooted in science, transparency, and heart, where customers heal and entrepreneurs earn fairly.

This isn’t just a product company. It’s a movement.

Health. Wealth. Living. Giving.

That’s what drives us—and what makes Jump To Health positioned for breakout growth.

Here’s What I’ve Learned

By Audrey Sommerfeld, Founder

I didn’t grow up with a silver spoon.

I grew up with food stamps, leg braces, and a face doctors said they’d need to break my jaw to fix.

I had a jaw deformity—my top jaw was smaller than my bottom. I spent eight years in dental work, braces, and speech therapy. My legs were in braces too, just to help me walk. And I learned quickly that when you're different, people treat you differently.

I grew up in a town of 200 people, where dreams were small, and silence was survival.

My father was angry. My mother belittled. And the unspoken rule was clear: girls don’t need ambition—they need to behave.

With help of two teachers, they agreed I could go to school, but they told me: Be a nurse. Maybe a teacher. Don’t expect more.

So I tried. I really did.

But when I said, “I want a different path,” my mother said, “I have no daughter now.”

I was disowned. I had no one. I faced the holidays with nowhere to go (I was in a dorm, I had to leave).

One night, I stood on a bridge wondering if the world would notice if I disappeared.

Here’s what I’ve learned…

1. You can be broken and still be chosen. You can feel completely alone and still have purpose.

A voice inside whispered: “Don’t do it. Not like this.”

That voice saved me and I’ve been listening to it ever since and from that moment on, I vowed to never abandon myself again.

2. The world will try to shrink you. Don’t let it. Your calling is bigger than your comfort.

I put myself through college. Two degrees. Worked full-time.

Then I applied to one of the top business schools in the world—because someone told me, “Think small, stay small. Think big, change the world.” It was at that point I stopped asking for permission to dream big.

3. Success doesn’t mean you’re fulfilled.

I built global brands at Procter & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson.

I had the title. The paycheck. The boardroom.

But I also had a sinking feeling that something was wrong because these companies weren’t built to heal people. They were built to sell to them. And the deeper I went, the clearer it became: most companies don’t care.

Not about people. Not about real health. Just profits.

4. Even good ideas can be poisoned by greed.

Network marketing gave me hope. Finally, a way to connect and educate, to really serve.

I helped Herbalife and ViSalus explode in growth.

But behind the scenes, I saw the same old story: hype over honesty. Profits over people.

5. Sometimes, the best solution is to start fresh—with different shoes.

A therapist once told me:

"You can keep wearing those old, worn-out shoes from your past… or you can choose new ones and walk into your future."

That stuck with me. I started lacing up.

6. If what you need doesn’t exist, create it. That’s what I did, I built what I wish existed.

I started Jump To Health to be the company I needed back then. A company rooted in honesty, integrity, science and service.

● One with products backed by nutritionists, not gimmicks.

● A compensation plan that doesn’t trick you.

● A mission that lifts people up, not locks them in.

Health. Wealth. Living. Giving.

That’s our core. That’s our promise.

I built this company for people who feel like they’re meant for more… but haven’t had a place that felt like home yet.

The woman who’s been told to stay small.

The man who’s tired of choosing between his health and his paycheck.

The parent who wants more time, more energy, more meaning.

The dreamer who knows deep down… they were meant for more.

If you’ve ever felt broken, behind, or stuck in a system that wasn’tbuilt for you, I see you. If that’s you—welcome home.

Why Fats are Important in Your Diet

Nutrition Collections Series

Busting the Food Myth: Why Fats are Important in Your Diet

by Audrey Sommerfeld | Founder & CEO

August 2024

Let’s clear up a big misunderstanding: the idea that all fats are bad. Far from it—your body needs healthy fats to function properly! Not only do they provide energy, but they're also vital components of every cell, including those in your brain, which is about 60% fat.

The Vital Roles of Nutritional Fats

Fats are indispensable in:

  1. Hormone Regulation
  2. Body Temperature Maintenance
  3. Immune System Support
  4. Reproductive Health
  5. Insulin Signaling
  6. Nutrient Absorption

Back in the 1980s, a flawed study and aggressive food lobbying skewed dietary guidelines towards carbs and away from fats. This led to increases in obesity and other health issues as carbs can turn to sugar, causing insulin spikes and mood fluctuations.

The Power of Feeling Full with Dietary Fats

Fats help manage your hunger better than carbs. They take longer to digest, which keeps you feeling full longer. Starting your meal with a fat-rich food like avocado salad, cream soup, or cheese can help you consume less overall.

Here’s What You Gain from Fats:

Brain and Skin Health

Essential for nourishing your brain, butter contains butyric acid, known for supporting both brain and gut health. Butyric acid is a short-chain fatty acid that serves as a primary energy source for colon cells, aids in maintaining intestinal barrier function, and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Satiety

Incorporating fats like those found in the keto diet can help reduce your overall calorie intake. Fat takes longer to digest (longer than protein, and much longer than carbs), so when you begin a meal with a cream soup, or cheese, or avocado salad – you will eat less overall.

Some say that along with walking more, eating healthy fats is why the French are thinner! The French eat more fats – think cream and cheese – and by doing so, eat less food overall.

Nutrient Absorption

Fats aid in absorbing fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K.The fats you absorb from food gives your body essential fatty acids called linoleic and linolenic acid. They are called "essential" because your body cannot make them alone and needs them for brain development, controlling inflammation, and blood clotting.

Energy

Fats provide sustained energy, especially during prolonged physical activity. During exercise, your body burns calories from the carbohydrates you have eaten. But after 20 minutes, your body depends on calories from fat to keep going.

Choosing the Right Fats

Not all fats are created equal. Knowing the difference between good and bad fats can help you make healthier dietary choices.

Good Fats

Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are your allies in maintaining good health. You can find these beneficial fats in foods like nuts, seeds, avocados, and cold-water fish such as salmon and herring. Additionally, oils derived from olives, corn, sunflowers, and other vegetables are packed with these healthy fats. A quick tip to identify unsaturated fats is that they remain liquid at room temperature.

Omega-3 fatty acids, a specific type of polyunsaturated fat found in flax seeds, walnuts, and fatty fish, are particularly good for brain function and overall heart health.

Check out Vital Omega https://www.fluid.app/s/829a78

Butter also contains butyric acid, a potent fatty acid known for its ability to support digestive health, reduce inflammation, and lower disease risk. It provides essential energy to colon cells, aids in blood sugar regulation, and helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

Bad Fats

Conversely, trans fats are the fats you need to avoid. Commonly found in processed foods like margarine, trans fats can wreak havoc on your health. They increase LDL (bad) cholesterol levels while lowering HDL (good) cholesterol, which can lead to clogged arteries and heightened heart disease risk. Additionally, trans fats can make blood platelets stickier, further increasing the risk of heart disease.

While fats like monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and the butyric acid in butter can boost your health, trans fats found in processed foods can do significant harm. By choosing your fats wisely, you can enjoy the benefits of a healthier, well-balanced diet.

Food Myth – Is Maltodextrin worse than sugar?

Nutrition Collections Series

Food Myth – Is Maltodextrin

worse than sugar?

by Audrey Sommerfeld | Founder & CEO

February 2024

There are over 26 different types of maltodextrin – and it varies what they do, and what impact they can have on health.

Did you know your body makes maltodextrin?

Your body makes maltodextrin when it digests starch. Salivary amylase (enzymes in your mouth) take starch molecules and breaks up the long chains of the starch molecule into maltodextrin wherein the body further breaks it down to glucose.

Our bodies use glucose for fuel. Maltodextrins are just shorter chains of starch molecules. So, if you eat bread, pasta, potatoes, rice – you are making maltodextrin in your body. Maltodextrin is only glucose molecules stuck together. Your blood stream is 5% glucose solution and maltodextrin is easily degraded into glucose.

Maltodextrin vs. Sugar

Due to its chemical structure, it doesn't cause the same blood glucose spike as sugar or high fructose corn syrup do. Some internet myth is it is ‘worse’ than sugar which is not true. Sugar contains fructose – and too much of that can be bad for the liver.

Sugar can spike insulin and can be addictive. Maltodextrin is produced from starches of tapioca, corn, wheat, potatoes or rice and has a flavor that is somewhere between tasteless to hinting of sweetness.

The internet concern is that maltodextrins are rapidly turned into glucose, BUT it’s just like starch found in say white bread.

The key is studies of maltodextrin start with 50 grams (about 12 ½ teaspoons) at a single serving. Capsules and most products contain less than 1 gr or less than 1/8 of a teaspoon.

Health Benefits of Maltodextrin

 1. Used in Infant Nutrition where there is lactase deficiency Mothers milk helps provide lactose as a source of energy for infant development. A lactase deficiency can result in inability to digest the nutrition and lead to diarrhea. In such cases maltodextrin is used as a substitute for lactose to provide energy for the infant. It is preferred vs. glucose as it helps reduce diarrhea and related intestinal distress.

2. Used for GI surgery. Protein drinks with high levels of maltodextrin were tested vs. fasting in patients undergoing GI surgery. Studies showed that having this protein/high maltodextrin beverage helped patients have 50% less hospitalization time.

3. Used in sports drinks. Studies showed that maltodextrin vs. sugars, helped runners have less GI distress and also showed better performance as it does not spike insulin like sugar. They can enhance the absorption of water during exercise, and can help aid endurance performance. Other studies show it aids sports recovery by enhancing glycogen recovery, and muscle synthesis- so better recovery.

4. Brain health. In Europe, claims are allowed on maltodextrin that it can help contribute to the maintenance of normal brain function.

"Digestive Resistant Maltodextrin”

is a prebiotic fiber.

It boosts the healthy probiotics in the gut, helps curb hunger, boost regularity,

helps to lower cholesterol, and supports healthier blood sugar levels,

Prebiotic Fiber

Added to Two Jump Products

You can get some prebiotic fiber eating chicory, Jersualem artichokes, raw asparagus, cooked onions, or bananas.

To get the same benefit as in one Jump To Health shake (Core or VPro) you would need to eat 1.3 pounds of bananas.

So, it is hard to get enough prebiotic fiber in our diet. Let alone the fact that most adults get about ½ to 1/3 of the fiber that they need each day.

So we added prebiotic fiber to our shakes, and have 2 types in our Fiber Pro.

Nutrition for Bone & Joint Pain

Relief Collections Series

Nutrition for

Bone & Joint Pain

by Audrey Sommerfeld | Founder & CEO

February 2024

For those that suffer muscle and bone pain (torn rotator cuff surgery, back pain, fusions) nutrition can help play a role in fighting inflammation and pain.

Too much sugar, alcohol, lack of water, poor diet can contribute to feeling worse.

Help our body fight inflammation by avoiding or fighting some of the things that can make inflammation worse.

Factors that Increase Inflammation:

 1. Obesity – lots of studies show that being overweight can cause your body to create more cytokines which increase inflammation. And with diabetes – as we become more resistant to insulin, we see more inflammation. So losing weight can help, plus it takes pressure off joints and knees. One pound of weight loss removes 4 pounds of pressure on the knees – so it can help.

2. Diet – if you eat a lot of sugar, and most people do – we eat an average of 156 pounds per person per year hidden in our foods – it can increase the bad bacteria in your gut and increase inflammation.

3. Smoking – smoking increases inflammation

4. Sleep and Stress – lack of sleep, and stress in life can make your body more inflammatory too.

5. Foods that make inflammation worse: Refined carbohydrates, such as white bread and pastries. Refined carbs have had most of their fiber removed so that they convert to sugar faster in your body. This makes you happy, then hungry. And then it feeds the bad bacteria in your gut. Leading to more inflammation and tiredness.

Foods to Avoid

Sugars and high fructose corn syrup.

Look at the added sugar in your dressings, limit or stop soda, limit juice drinks as they are often just High Fructose corn syrup without fiber – or add Fiber Pro to offset the sugar and balance it back out – similar to eating fruit.

Look at cereal, yogurt, ketchup – try to avoid sugar as much as possible.

Sugar consumption has grown 492% since the mid 1970’s. We eat an average of 8 oz.of sugars a day hidden in our food. And it is not just sugar. We also eat a lot of fructose and now the new crystalline fructose – which is a higher concentrated form of high fructose corn syrup.

Fructose puts you at a greater risk for:

  1. Metabolic Syndrome – which can increase blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, triglycerieds and fat around the waist.
  2. Insulin Resistance – diabetes risk
  3. Obesity
  4. Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver disease
  5. Colo-rectal cancer
  6. Intestinal permeability
  7. Bacteria growth
  8. Damage blood vessels
  9. Contribute to heart health issues and cause inflammation in blood vessels.
  10.  And fructose can be plain on a label, or can come from coconut palm sugar, molasses, agave and other sugars that sound healthy.

Is Sucralose – AceK – any better?

A lot of companies use combinations of sweeteners. Years ago we all thought it was a good alternative to sugar – but is it?

  1. Studies show it can increase hunger so you eat more.
  2. Some studies have shown that sucralose can change your gut microbiome by lowering the number of good bacteria by half.
  3. Research done on animals shows that sucralose can also increase inflammation in the body.

Avoid unhealthy fat like margarine, shortening, and lard.

Eat real butter – it has butyric acid which is good for the bacteria in our gut. Margarine does not have this. Margarine is higher in Omega 6 – which may promote inflammation.

Most margarines contain trans fats, and they are often added to processed foods to extend shelf life. Unlike the naturally occurring trans fats found in dairy and meat, artificial trans fats have been shown to cause inflammation and increase disease risk.

In addition to lowering HDL (good) cholesterol, trans fats may impair the function of the endothelial cells lining your arteries, which is a risk factor for heart disease. Consuming artificial trans fats is linked to high levels of inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP).

In fact, in one study, CRP levels were 78% higher among women who reported the highest trans fat intake foods high in trans fats include French fries and other fried fast food, some varieties of microwave popcorn, certain margarines and vegetable shortenings, packaged cakes and cookies, some pastries, and all processed foods that list partially hydrogenated vegetable oil on the label.

Avoid a lot of processed meats and red meats – make sure your diet is balanced.

What to Eat To Fight Inflammation:

1. Healthy Fats – fatty fish like salmon, mackeral, sardines, or avocado, olive oil, even butter but not margarine.

Butter has healthy fats. And healthy dairy fat too. A lot of people think dairy is inflammatory - but truly, it can help heart health and gut health and brain health.

A 2017 review of 52 clinical studies, published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, concluded that dairy generally has anti-inflammatory effects, except in people allergic to cow’s milk.

And studies show fat can help the heart, where sugar increases triglycerides, sugar increases blood pressure, sugar raises bad cholesterol.

The science is showing that the low fat diet that started in the 1980’s was wrong. That is why on New You In 22 so many people report sleeping better, having more energy, and better skin, hair, nails. They are getting the right balance of healthy fats, and the right kinds of foods to fight inflammation and detox from all the sugar hidden in our food.

2. Fiber – from whole grains, and like that in our Fiber Pro– prebiotic fiber in asparagus, onions, chicory root. Fiber slows the amount of sugar being absorbed in your body from foods. Add Fiber pro to tea, coffee, or any beverage and it boosts gut health. Especially if you are trying to cut back on carbs. Get the benefits without the carbs and calories.

Info in Fiber Pro https://www.fluid.app/s/2042e9

3. Healthy Greens – kale, broccoli, spinach – have an ingredient called indole 3 carbinol which is powerful anti-inflammatory support, along with phytonutrients. This is why in our New You In 22 we have the Fruit Power & Vegetable Power capsules. If you don’t like kale – well these capsules have 37 cups worth. Super anti-inflammatory.

Info on Fruit, power, and vegetable power https://www.fluid.app/s/942f1a

4. Berries and high antioxidant fruits like blueberries, rasperries, blackberries – fruits contain antioxidants that help with inflammation.

They can also be found in Tea like our Power Ox or our Fruit Power and Vegetable Power capsules. We want people to eat fruits and vegetables - you will see this in our recipes – but many people don’t’ have access to them, don’t like them, or find they are grown in mineral depleted soil and have less nutritional value.

 Info On Power Ox https://www.fluid.app/s/0b1ad1

So when you supplement with Fruit Power and Vegetable Power capsules– people feel better fast!! Like 2-3 days fast. The fruit capsule has the power of 6-8 servings of fruit polyphenols. The vegetables way more than that! So these are the nutrients that work in the cell.

The Arthritis Organization has some great information on fruit and fruit extracts. Fruits, especially berries are loaded with antioxidants, and anthocyanins and carotenoids, which give berries their deep color. These compounds help rid the body of free radicals that promote inflammation and help prevent heart disease and certain cancers.

5. Nuts – which have healthy fat and fiber. Which is why in New You In 22 you will see our meal plans that include all of these healthy nuts, healthy fats, fiber, and healthy low glycemic, low sugar fruits and vegetables.

The program will detox your body of sugar, chemicals and without cleanse side effects that those detox teas can have. And we do it in a way that you don’t miss sugar, or have cravings. Instead it is pure, clean energy.
